Dear All
Hello – thanks for your comments and sorry have been deep in the bush with limited internet access. Was just in the Kakamega Forest and found lots of interesting ants about. Did you know that throughout your entire life you are never more than 2 feet from an ant?
One of the most common ants in the forest were the Siafu, or Safari Ants, who hunt in large swarms pouring through the undergrowth and leaf-litter and devouring everything in their path. While watching some bees coming and going from flowers, I felt a sharp nip on my leg and looking down discovered that I was standing in a swelling river of ants. I jumped out of the way and carefully took a picture of one of the ‘soldiers’ – who is actually a larger form of a worker ant, reaching up to snap at me with its sharp mandibles!
